Xavier Nwankpa is one of the highly-rated defensive prospects in college football who is in his junior year with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Nwankpa started playing high school football at Southeast Polk High School where he led his school to a state championship as a senior. The Altoona native recorded 26 total tackles and four interceptions and was named the 2021 Iowa High School Football Player of the Year. Nwankpa was the No.1 safety in the 2022 recruiting class and the 11th overall recruit in the nation. The five-star safety was the highest-rated prospect to ever come out of the state of Iowa.

Coming out of Southeast Polk as the top safety recruit in the nation, Nwankpa started his collegiate football journey at home with Iowa over offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Iowa State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Penn State and Notre Dame among others. In his freshman season with the Hawkeyes, Nwankpa appeared in all 13 games and recorded 12 total tackles, one touchdown and a pass breakup. The following year as a sophomore, Nwankpa saw action in 12 games and put on a show for the Hawkeyes. He recorded 42 tackles, two pass breakups and one interception on the season. It turned out to be the most productive year for Nwankpa.
