Xavier Nwankpa is an American college football player who has quickly risen through the ranks to become one of the sought-after defensive backs in college football. Nwankpa began his football career at Southeast Polk High School where he led them to a state championship in his four-year prep career. As a senior, he recorded 26 tackles and four interceptions whereas he posted 41 tackles, six interceptions, and two touchdowns as a junior. Nwankpa who was named MaxPreps Iowa Player of the Year as a senior was the No.1 prospect in the state of Iowa in the 2022 recruiting class. The five-star safety from Altoona started his collegiate football journey with Iowa Hawkeyes despite holding 31 offers and scholarships from top programs like Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Iowa State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Penn State.

In his freshman season, Nwankpa made a breakout start in the 2022 Music City Bowl against Kentucky where he totaled eight tackles, one pass breakup, and an interception. He concluded his rookie campaign with 12 tackles, one interception, and a touchdown. The following year as a sophomore, Nwankpa saw more playing time as he started in 12 out of 14 games while recording 42 tackles, two tackles for a loss, two pass breakups, and one interception. Nwankpa has the athletic ability and versatility to play in any position in Iowa’s defense and he could explode as a defensive player in his junior campaign in 2024.
