“You've always been a model citizen”: When Nick Saban congratulated Mark Ingram II on a successful career

Mark Ingram had a wonderful college football career under Nick Saban at Alabama, establishing himself as one of the greatest to play for the program. The running back left an indelible mark on the Crimson Tide before making his way to the professional stage in 2011.

Following his NFL career, which spanned 12 seasons at three different teams, Mark Ingram was hired by FOX as a broadcaster in 2023. He became a member of the network’s college football pregame show “Big Noon Kickoff."

In his first appearance on the pregame show, the crew had a special welcome for him. In what was a surprise to Ingram, a video of the then-Alabama coach Nick Saban was played, offering Ingram a special message on the conclusion of his NFL career and start of his new endeavor.

“Mark, they're trying to get me to give you a hard time about something,” Saban said. “If it was (Tom) Rinaldi or one of these other guys that I've had some experiences with, it'd be very easy to do. But for you, it's really hard, because you've always been a model citizen to me.
"I'd like to congratulate you on a great career and congratulate you on the opportunity you have as a sports broadcaster. We appreciate you, we love you, you've been a great ambassador of the University of Alabama."

Mark Ingram had an illustrious college career under Nick Saban at Alabama. From 2008 to 2010, Ingram rose from a promising freshman to a college football legend as he helped establish the foundation of Saban’s dynasty.

In three years in Tuscaloosa, Ingram led Alabama to the first SEC championship and national title under Saban. He rushed for 3,261 yards and 42 touchdowns on 572 carries in 39 games for the Crimson Tide. He also recorded 60 receptions for 670 yards and four touchdowns.

Mark Ingram was the first Alabama player to win the Heisman Trophy, claiming the honor in 2009. He was also the first player Saban led to the award in his coaching career. He also claimed a host of other award during his time in Tuscaloosa.

The running back appreciated Saban for his immense contribution to his playing career at the collegiate level following the coach’s surprise retirement in January 2024.

“Coach Saban is the GOAT!!” Ingram posted on X. “Thanks for believing in a young man from Flint, Michigan. Helped me become a champion on the field, but more importantly a champion in LIFE. Enjoy retirement Coach, you earned that!! Love you Coach Saban, ROLL TIDE!!”

Mark Ingram’s career under Nick Saban not only elevated Alabama to national prominence but also set the tone for the dynasty that would follow. He epitomizes Saban’s philosophy with his blend of power, vision, and determination, presenting him as a foundational piece in the program’s resurgence
