After getting a strong entrance in F9, Jakob Toretto returned as a franchise regular in Fast X. Beginning the final events of the franchise, almost every major Fast Saga character had small yet significant roles to play in the film, and so did John Cena’s Jakob.

Disclaimer: The following article contains spoilers for Fast X.

Jakob was being looked at as a potential replacement to carry the franchise forward after Dom goes down in the final installment. But the latest Fast and Furious outing had something entirely different stored for him.

What was Jakob Toretto’s fate in Fast X, explained

Fast X was full of character deaths as it acted similar to Avengers: Infinity War in terms of hanging the fates of certain characters in the balance towards its cliffhanger ending. However, it only killed off a couple of characters permanently, while others will most likely get to return in Fast 11.

One of the permanent character deaths involved Luis Da Silva Jr.’s Diogo from Fast Five who made his return for a brief cameo. He was killed by Dante, who rigged his car to blow up during a drag race in Rio.

Similar to him, the second character to go down with a car explosion was none other than John Cena’s Jakob Toretto. After Dom gave him a second chance in F9, he redeemed himself by making a sacrifice play to save Dom and his nephew, little B.

Jakob’s cannon car carried a lot of explosives, and he made his car crash into multiple other cars that were pursuing Dom and Little B. He might have survived if his car had just crashed. But it is presumed that he died for good when his car exploded along with the others. So, his death could also be permanent.

Could Jakob still be brought back?

Many fans would argue that death has no meaning in the Fast Saga. Letty’s car exploded, but she survived. Han’s car exploded, but his death was faked. Owen Shaw was thrown out of a plane, but he was brought back as well. Most recently, Fast X shocked fans by bringing Gal Gadot’s Gisele back towards the end. So really, nobody stays dead in this franchise.

The only character who got killed and buried was Vince. There’s no chance that he’d return. And in the case of Jakob Toretto, he also died like Han. However, his car exploded along with multiple others. So, there’s little to no chance for his survival especially because his demise raises the stakes for Fast X.

But there are still two ways through which he could be used to bring him back. One of those was explored in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, where Eteon brought Idris Elba’s Brixton Lore back from the dead as a Superhuman Cyborg. But again, it’s unlikely that Jakob Toretto’s body would have survived enough for cybernetic enhancements to be added.

So, he’d probably stay dead and the dream of all WWE fans to see John Cena and Dwayne Johnson together in Fast 11 would die, unless the next outing uses the second sci-fi way, i.e. time travel. The Fast Saga has used several sci-fi elements by trying to make them as realistic and believable as possible.

So with Fast X potentially killing off Dom and most of his family similar to Infinity War’s snap, could Fast 11 use time travel to bring them all back? If it does, then Jakob could be brought back too. But, even the hardcore fans of the franchise would agree that time travel is way too unrealistic, even for the Fast Saga. Hence, Dom, Brian, Tej, Roman, Han, and Ramsey might survive, but Jakob will possibly stay dead.
