The recent writer’s strike is causing all sorts of chaos for production houses, and it has already affected Marvel. Movies like Thunderbolts and Deadpool 3 will reportedly start their productions soon as their scripts are complete. But there are multiple other MCU projects with ongoing productions that have hit a snag as writers aren’t actively allowed to work on them.
Projects such as Daredevil: Born Again, Captain America: New World Order, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and Wonder Man were all under active production and there are others that are supposed to start later this year. But, most of them have come to a halt due to Hollywood’s current writer’s strike.
Blade, and 2 other Marvel projects that have halted production
Wonder Man
The Wonder Man series featuring Yahya Abdul Mateen-II began filming in the first week of April. But it is also the first reported series to become the victim of the writer’s strike issued by The Writers Guild of America. On Thursday, May 4, WGA’s line of picketers "[shut] down a Marvel location shoot in Hollywood."
Deadline also reported the same, but the shoot that got impacted was unidentified. However, it was presumed to be Wonder Man’s shooting location, which had been filming in the same location in Los Angeles since April. It’ll be interesting to see the duration till which this production halt lasts because each day that a project stays paused, the producers end up losing more money.
Furthermore, it’s important for Wonder Man’s production to go smoothly because if that doesn’t happen, then the project will be pushed to 2025, and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty could get delayed because its director, Destin Daniel Cretton is currently involved with Wonder Man’s filming.
Blade
This is a movie that has already been through a troublesome pre-production process behind the scenes. It was supposed to begin filming in 2022, but the production got delayed due to original director Bassam Tariq’s exit and a bad script that needed to be rewritten. But now as the project was moving closer to its filming date, it has hit another obstacle.
The Hollywood Reporter gave a full scoop on the setback that Blade faces as it stated:
"Marvel Studios is shutting down preproduction on its vampire thriller starring Mahershala Ali, which was set to begin filming next month in Atlanta. The feature project, which has been paused once before, becomes the first tentpole movie impacted by the strike."
No reports on when Blade will be back on schedule. It has been affected because it was one of the few MCU projects that had a constantly evolving script. So, it would be safe to presume that its new filming date would be slated when WGA’s writer’s strike comes to an end.
Director Yann Demange’s Blade was scheduled to arrive on September 6, 2024. But the current strike could push this date even further, and cause more changes to Marvel’s packed Phase 5 schedule.
Daredevil: Born Again
The third and latest project to be impacted by WGA’s writer’s strike is the upcoming Daredevil series for Disney+. As per Deadline, Born Again’s ongoing production was shut down on May 8 around 1 pm in Long Island, New York.
Deadline’s report stated that WGA East tweeted:
"WGA members on strike set up a sunrise picket at Silvercup East, where they’re supposed to be filming 'Daredevil,' but members of the Teamster Local 817 and IATSE Locals 829 and 52 are refusing to cross the picket line."
Following this, a showrunner on Daredevil: Born Again, who is a WGA picket captain, also tweeted about shutting the production on that day.
Daredevil: Born Again is supposed to be an 18-episode-long series that is rumored to hit Disney+ in two parts in 2024. So, if this production snag goes on for a long time, its release could be pushed from mid-2024 to late 2024.
Other potential Marvel delays
All these delays could further impact pre-announced movies and TV shows, including Fantastic Four, Vision Quest, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (as mentioned above), Armor Wars, and an unannounced Spider-Man 4.
MCU has already suffered a bunch of delays in its Phase 4 and Phase 5 schedules. But the recent Writer’s strike could cause further delays and move all the upcoming MCU projects of 2025 and beyond (if not 2024 as well).
