In a recent interview with Forbes Magazine, Gabriel Luna, who played Ghost Rider (or Robbie Reyes) in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D series, revealed that he was open to returning as the character in the MCU.

Luna played Robbie Reyes in the fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D where he initially came into conflict with Daisy Johnson's Quake. However, he later teamed up with her and S.H.I.E.L.D to fight his uncle Eli Morrow's former co-worker turned ghost, Lucy Bauer. He also aided Johnson and her team against AIDA and her army of Life Model Decoys before he discovered the Darkhold and left with the item to find a place to safely hide it.

As of now, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D's canonicity within the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe is still unknown. The question of it being canon in the MCU had already arisen by the time Gabriel Luna took on the Ghost Rider role. Thus, Luna's Robbie Reyes being canon to the MCU is also a question that is yet to be answered.

"I'm always open": Gabriel Luna says he is ready to return to the role of Ghost Rider if asked

As mentioned earlier, while speaking to Forbes, Gabriel Luna revealed that he was ready to return as Ghost Rider in the MCU if the opportunity ever arose. The actor shared that he still loved the character, saying he was always asked questions about his time as Robbie Reyes following his run as the character in season 4 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Last of Us actor then revealed that he saw the demand for the character's return and was open to reprising the role, even if it would take years for Marvel to decide to bring him back. He said:

"It feels like the demand may be there and if the creative is there and it makes sense… I think with Marvel right now, it’s so intricately woven that it would be a few years out if they started to think about it, to do the character. I’m always open."

In the same interview, Gabriel Luna admitted that he would initially always answer questions regarding Ghost Rider's comeback with less enthusiasm. This is because he was satisfied with what he and the creatives of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D had done with his character and was fine with not reprising the role again.

"My stock answer used to be, 'I loved what we did, I’m very happy with what we accomplished and I can be happy leaving it on the shelf and admiring what we did and have the audience remember it fondly, the way they do. To do the character again just gives me another opportunity to screw it up."

The actor then revealed that his return as Ghost Rider would be dependent on a good story. Moreover, he added that he would be on board and willingly keep himself in shape for the role as long as his reprisal wish was fulfilled.

Gabriel Luna then revealed that the source material for his roles of Ghost Rider in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Tommy Miller in The Last of Us helped him develop a deep connection with those characters. As a result, he enjoyed playing both of them.

Gabriel Luna's Ghost Rider can return to the MCU via a Midnight Sons project or a solo project focusing on his character

As for how Gabriel Luna's Robbie Reyes can return to the MCU, it remains to be seen as Marvel has not officially announced his comeback in any shape or form. There is also the issue of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D's narrative canonicity within the MCU, as it is still unknown whether or not the project is canon.

However, due to excessive fan demand and Luna's eagerness to return, there is the possibility of his Ghost Rider returning to the MCU, even if it could be a soft-rebooted version of the character.

The MCU is currently expanding the multiverse and diving deep into the realm of supernatural creatures and monsters, starting with the Moon Knight series and the Werewolf by Night Halloween special. Mahershala Ali's Blade will also continue exploring the supernatural realm by introducing vampires into the MCU.

Through these aforementioned projects, it looks as if Marvel is laying the groundwork for a possible Midnight Sons project, which will focus on heroes tied heavily to the supernatural realm, such as Man Thing, Doctor Strange, Blade, and Elsa Bloodstone. Comic book fans will know that Reyes' Ghost Rider is a key member of the group, which is why this project could serve as the vehicle for Gabriel Luna to make a return.

If not Midnight Sons, then Gabriel Luna could return as Robbie Reyes in a potential solo project focusing on the character.

Interestingly, the MCU has also referenced Ghost Rider in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Moreover, there was reportedly a fight scene involving the character that was cut from the final version of 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Fans of Gabriel Luna can currently catch him in The Last of Us series which is streaming on HBO Max.
