With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 restoring some hope for MCU fans, all eyes are now set on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The Avengers have been scattered since Endgame as most of the OG members retired, died, or are in an off-world. Meanwhile, the second gen-Avengers like Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Black Panther are doing their own thing.
The upcoming Phase 5 projects are supposed to set up The Kang Dynasty. However, following the colossal failure of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, writer Jeff Loveness is rumored to have been let go of from Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Reportedly, he isn’t writing the film anymore.
The Kang Dynasty is looking for a new writer
On a recent episode of The Hot Mic podcast, host and industry insider Jeff Sneider made the claim. He said that according to his sources, the Rick & Morty and Quantumania writer won’t be scripting Avengers: The Kang Dynasty anymore. Sneider said that while it was unconfirmed, it wasn't a recent development that happened due to the ongoing WGA writers’ strike.
As per Seinder, Jeff Loveness was let go before the WGA strike. He said that Marvel is currently looking for new writers as they want to go in a different direction than the one that Loveness had to offer. Fans believe that it is a result of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s box office failure.
After getting a franchise-best budget of $200 million, the movie was hated by the critics and ended up making $475 million. This is far less than what the first Ant-Man movie made. So with Disney/Marvel looking to fix issues, someone had to face the consequences of Quantumania’s failure to ensure a profit.
Fan reactions the to The Kang Dynasty rumor
As soon as Sneider gave out the scoop, fans across the internet had very positive reactions to it. Many of them were worried about Loveness’ treatment of Avengers 5. They took to Twitter so express their joy and even suggest replacements for the job.
Jeff Loveness got a lot of criticism for his Quantumania script, so Marvel will have to look for a new writer to pair up with Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton.
Why is Loveness’ exit both a good thing and a bad thing?
Starting with the bad thing first, Loveness’ exit and the ongoing writers’ strike could delay Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The strike is expected to go on for the whole summer, so a new writer can only be hired and start working on the project when the strike gets over.
If Marvel wants to release Avengers 5 on its originally scheduled release date of May 2, 2025, the new writer would have to finish the script by the end of the year. Alternatively, they could also finish the script by the first quarter of 2024.
Only if this happens would Marvel be able to begin filming by March/April 2024. Then again, if the new writer doesn’t get ample time, then Avengers 5 could face the same fate as Quantumania.
Moving on to the good thing, if Marvel delays The Kang Dynasty, then whoever is hired to pen the script would get more time. Director Destin Daniel Cretton would also get enough time to finish his ongoing Wonder Man series and then jump on to Avengers 5.
Instead of bringing back Ant-Man franchise characters like Luis and Jimmy Woo, Loveness also introduced new characters in the Quantumania that weren’t from the comics. That’s another reason why many fans didn’t relate to the film. So, with a new writer taking on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, fans won’t have to go through all that again.
