The MCU continues to introduce new characters with every project, and Guardians 3 is no different. Ever since Phase 4 began, we have witnessed a new superhero (a kid, an adult, or both) come into play with all its movies and TV shows. Now, Phase 5 is continuing to do so, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has brought in the likes of Adam and Phyla.

Disclaimer: The following article contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Adam Warlock is a much more popular character than Phyla. But non-comic book viewers of Guardians 3 were left clueless upon seeing Phyla join the next rendition of the Guardians in the film’s mid-credits scene. She is played by the young actress Kai Zen. But this is a character that has yet to grow into her comic book counterpart, Phyla-Vell.

Phyla is the daughter of the original Captain Mar-Vell and an Eternal called Elysius. In the comics, Mar-Vell and Elysius loved each other and always planned to have kids. But that couldn’t happen, as Mar-Vell died. So, Elysius used his genes and artificially impregnated herself. Eventually, she had a son called Genis-Vell, who went on to take his father’s mantle and become the new Captain Marvel.

After that came a situation where Genis-Vell worked with Entropy to destroy the entire universe. Then, as the universe was recreated, Elysius went through the process of impregnating herself with Mar-Vell’s DNA once again. This time she gave birth to Phyla-Vell, who went through an accelerated growth process. The memories of her growing up on Titan were simply implanted in her head.

Meanwhile, her brother, Genis-Vell, went insane when his cosmic awareness began to develop. So, Phyla, Elysius, and Starfox snapped him out of his madness, and the former convinced her brother to pass on the mantle of Captain Marvel to her. After that, she met with the daughter of Drax and her future lover, Moondragon.

But then she found herself caught in the Annihilation Wave, where she joined Nova and other cosmic heroes to battle Annihilus, who had the previous Quasar’s Quantum bands at this time. But these Quantum bands chose Phyla-Vell and latched on to her. That’s when Nova defeated Annihilus, and Phyla became the new Quasar.

She and Moondragon then freed Adam from his cocoon, and eventually, Adam and Phyla-Quasar ended up joining the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Being half Eternal, she is immune to all kinds of diseases. Along with that, she also has super strength, stamina, durability, speed, and reflexes that come from her father’s genes. Her Kree Nega Bands boosted her ability to fly, making her capable of flying faster than the speed of light at her peak.

Thanks to her father, she also possesses a fraction of cosmic awareness. But she lost this ability after she got the Quantum Bands and became Quasar. However, the Quantum Bands provided her with some other abilities, including construct creation, force field generation, and energy wave emission. Phyla is also a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant and possesses a great ability to hold a sword.

Guardians 3’s Phyla is nothing like the comics, where she was the Kree-Eternal hybrid daughter of Elysius and Mar-Vell. In the MCU, she belongs to one of the species that was created by the High Evolutionary and doesn't even have the last name "Vell". The only thing that is common with the books is that she and Adam joined the Guardians together in both universes.

However, she didn’t get a lot of screen time in Guardians 3. So, the extent of her powers is unknown for now. One can be sure that her abilities will be nerfed in the MCU. But we saw her hands and eyes glow while she was charging to attack the aliens on a desert planet.

Besides that, the High Evolutionary revealed that she has a high intellect, requires little food or rest, and is stronger than regular humans. We will know for sure when she goes on to appear in future MCU outings. Still, she is a very important character who could take on the title of Quasar in the future.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is currently playing in theaters.
