Great West Indian batsman Desmond Haynes is easily one of the finest ODI cricketers of all time. In a one-day career which saw him play 238 matches, Haynes scored 8648 runs at an average of more than 40 with 17 centuries and 57 fifties against his name.

Haynes’ first international match was an ODI against Australia at St John’s, Antigua in 1978 and he produced a sterling effort to help the West Indies secure victory. With a destructive 148 from just 136 balls, he ensured that his team posted a total of 313 for 9.

Due to a rain intervention, the Aussies were given a revised target of 226 which they needed to score in 36 overs. The visitors fell short by 44 runs and Desmond Haynes picked up the ‘Man of the Match’ award for his great innings.
