Angelo Mathews initially made his debut for the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009. He only played one match for them before being dropped from the side and released from his contract. He went on to play for Pune Warriors India for three seasons (2011-2013). This is also where he scored his first and only half-century in the tournament when he scored an unbeaten 65 against the Deccan Chargers.

He scored a total of 532 runs across three seasons for PWI at an average of 20.4. His bowling failed to impress as he claimed just 20 wickets with a best bowling figures 4/19.

Following his departure from PWI, he went on to play for Delhi Capitals for two more seasons. His form depreciated even further. He scored a total of just 176 runs across both seasons for the Delhi Capitals. It was clear that the former Sri Lankan captain wasn’t good enough to warrant another IPL contract.
