10 things to know about new BCCI President Shashank Manohar

Manohar replaces the late Dalmiya as BCCI President

The Vidarbha-based lawyer Shashank Manohar has been elected as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the second time. Former president Manohar was the sole candidate to be elected for the top post of the BCCI, which was fallen vacant with the demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya. He was announced as the President in the Special General Meeting which was held in Mumbai today.

Here are the 10 things to know about the newly appointed chief:

• Shashank Manohar was born in Nagpur on 29th September 1957 to VR Manohar, a former advocate general of Maharashtra
• A lawyer by profession, Mr Manohar’s first foray into cricket administration was in 1996 when he took charge of the Vidharbha Cricket Association.
• He first came into the news during Australia’s tour of India in 2004, for preparing a green top in Nagpur for the third Test of the four-match series. It is rumoured that because of that the then skipper Sourav Ganguly opted to sit out of the game, which India lost by 342 runs.
• He was a key component during Sharad Pawar’s reign as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) between 2005 and 2008 and took over from him as the chief of the board in October 2008.
• Under his tenure as the top boss, India became the No.1 ranked team in Test cricket for the first time in 2009 and then won the 50-over Cricket World Cup in 2011 at home.
• In 2007, it was Mr Manohar who suggested performance-related remunerations and contracts for the players after India’s opening round exit in the World Cup in the West Indies.
• Mr Manohar is known to be an extremely simple man. He still doesn't have a mobile phone of his own, he didn't have a passport until 2007 and went for his first abroad trip in 2008 when he attended the International Cricket Council meeting in Dubai.
• In 2010, Mr Manohar suspended the then IPL chairman Lalit Modi after giving him a fair hearing through the board’s disciplinary committee for his misdemeanors which brought a bad name to the administration of Cricket and the game itself.
• After the IPL spot-fixing scandal that hit Indian cricket in 2013, it was widely speculated that he could be given interim charge of the BCCI, but he declined to be the caretaker chief of the board, if N. Srinivasan continues in his role as the chief of the board.
• On 4th October 2015, Mr Manohar was elected unopposed for a second term as the President of the BCCI.
