Before the city became home to the modern MCA stadium in Gahunje, cricket in Pune was played at the Nehru stadium.

India played 11 ODI matches here between 1984 and 2005, winning five and losing six.

However, the venue is remembered for playing host to one of the biggest World Cup upsets in 1996, when Kenya defeated two-time champions West Indies by 73 runs to mark one of the greatest days of their ODI history.
