The 2011 World Cup saw the event being reduced to 14 teams as India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh hosted the tournament, India, Pakistan, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, England, South Africa, and West Indies played the quarter-finals which marked the end of Australia's 12 years undefeated streak in World Cups. India defeated Pakistan in the semi-final to meet Sri Lanka in the final who had defeated New Zealand in the other match-up.

Sri Lanka, riding on Mahela Jayawardene's century, set up a stiff target of 275 for MS Dhoni's side. Vital contributions from Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli helped India bounce back in the match but it what the skipper MS Dhoni who led his team to glory. He smashed each and every Lankan bowler and created one of the iconic moments of cricket by finishing the 2011 World Cup by hitting a six off Nuwan Kulasekara's delivery.
