After electing to field first, the captain of the Pakistan side, Inzamam-ul-Haq gave the ball to Umar Gul for the first over. Umar Gul bowled the first ball of the 2007 ICC World Cup to Chris Gayle. Gul finished that innings by being the most economical bowler from the Pakistani side.
