On December 8, 2001, the 1st Match of the LG Abans Triangular Series was played at Colombo. In that match, Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat first. On the very 1st delivery of the inning, Chaminda Vaas dismissed Dion Ebrahim for a duck. Zimbabwe could not recover that early blow and started losing wickets back to back. Zimbabwe managed to score only 38 runs off just 15.4 overs. Zimbabwe skipper Stuart Carlisle (16 off 35 balls) only became able to score in double figures for his side.

Chaminda Vaas eradicated Zimbabwe batting line-up single-handedly and took 8 wickets for just 19 runs. While chasing, Sri Lanka took only 4.2 overs to achieve their target. Sri Lanka won the match by 9 wickets and with record 274 balls remaining.

On February 19, 2003, the 18th Match of the ICC World Cup was played at Paarl. Canada won the toss and decided to bat first. Canadian batting line-up derailed in very short order as Prabath Nissanka (4 wickets for 12 runs) and Chaminda Vaas (3 wickets for 15 runs) ruined Zimbabwe for only 36, off 18.4 overs. 5 players went out for a duck and not a single player managed to score in double figures.

In reply, Sri Lanka took only 4.4 overs to score 37 runs of their target. Sri Lanka won the match by 9 wickets, with 272 balls remaining.

On April 25, 2004, the 3rd ODI of the Sri Lanka tour of Zimbabwe was played at Harare. Zimbabwe won the toss and decided to bat first but again, the same story of 2001 Zimbabwe vs Sri Lanka encounter got repeated. Back to back early wickets for Zimbabwe led them to a batting breakdown and they were bowled out for 35 off just 18 overs. None of the batsmen could score in double figures and 4 of them went out for a duck.

Chaminda Vaas appeared as the nightmare again for Zimbabwe. He took 4 wickets for 11 runs. Farveez Maharoof also got 3 wickets for just 3 runs. In reply, Sri Lanka registered a thumping 9 wickets victory over the hosts, with 244 balls remaining.
