Afghanistan created history as they recorded their first-ever ODI victory against Pakistan with an eight-wicket win in Match 22 of the ongoing ICC men's ODI World Cup 2023. With their massive win in Chennai, Afghanistan have jumped from tenth position to sixth on the points table.
Batting first, Pakistan reached a par first-innings total of 282/7 in their 50 overs. Fifties from Abdullah Shafique (58) and Babar Azam (74) set up a perfect platform before quick-fire 40s from Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed finished the innings strongly.
Given that Afghanistan had never chased down a 280+ target in ODIs before, their chase could've been extremely tricky. However, against the likes of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, and Shadab Khan, the Afghani batters carved out the chase in the most diligent fashion.
A 130-run opening stand between Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65) and Ibrahim Zadran (87) provided the perfect start for Afghanistan before Rahmat Shah's mature knock of 77* made sure that Pakistan didn't find a way to make a comeback in the game.
The Pakistani bowling unit seemed toothless as Afghanistan completed their highest-ever run-chase with eight wickets and six balls to spare.
Here's a look at the 2023 World Cup points table after the Afghanistan vs. Pakistan match:
With the win, Afghanistan have soared up to the sixth spot on the points table. The Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side have now recorded two wins in five matches and have a net run rate of -0.969.
Pakistan, meanwhile, are still placed fifth on the leaderboard. However, with only four more games remaining, the Babar Azam-led unit have all but entered the 'do-or-die' situation in the tournament.
Defending champions England slip to the bottom of the points table
England were placed in the ninth spot prior to the Pakistan vs. Afghanistan game on Monday. However, with Afghanistan bagging two points, the defending champions finds themselves at the foot of the points table.
With just a solitary win against Bangladesh from their first four fixtures, England have started their campaign on a terrible note. After a crushing loss in the tournament-opener against New Zealand, England fell short against Afghanistan.
To make matters worse, the Jos Buttler-led unit faced another setback, this time against a high-flying South Africa. With just two points and a net run rate of -1.248, England need a huge revival to turn their campaign around.
The Three Lions are up against Sri Lanka in their next fixture. The upcoming game will be played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, October 26.
