Cricket is the most unpredictable sport in the world, which in turn makes it full of uncertainties and excitement. Representing the country at the international level is itself a big achievement for a player. However, to establish himself at the highest level he has to prove his potential against the best teams in the world. There have been numerous instances when debutants have stunned the world with their impeccable performances and have managed to entertain the fans all across the globe.
On the contrary though, players failing to perform in their debut game is not an elusive sight either, as they are unable to withstand the pressure of international cricket. Here are three batting legends who got a pair in their debut game but still managed to prove their prowess as a batsman.
#1 Marvan Atapattu
Marvan Atapattu is one of the greatest batsman to have represented Sri Lanka in all formats of the game. Atapattu has more than 14000 international runs against his name which proves his stature at the international level. However, he had an unforgettable start to his career, as he was dismissed without scoring in both the innings of his debut Test match against India in 1990.
Despite an awful start to his career, Attapattu showed temperament, persistence and fortitude, which in turn made him a batting legend for Sri Lanka.
#2 Graham Gooch
Graham Gooch is a name in Test cricket that needs no introduction. He is one of the best batsmen to ever play the game of cricket, which is evident from the fact that he scored over 8500 runs in his Test career, which lasted over a couple of decades.
Gooch was known for his unmatched class and incredible elegance. His ability to play shots on both sides of the wicket made him an even dangerous batsman. However, Gooch had a poor start to his international career, as he could not score even a single run in both the innings of his debut Test match against the arch rivals Australia in the year 1975 at Edgbaston.
Despite his embarrassing start in the international arena, Gooch got another chance to prove his capability as a batsman and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands to show the world, the enormous talent he possessed.
#3 Saeed Anwar
Saeed Anwar is arguably the best opening batsman for Pakistan, especially in the One Day International format. Anwar scored over 12000 international runs for the Men in Green in his fourteen-year long career.
Anwar had a horrific start to his career though, as he scored ducks in both innings of his debut Test match against a very strong West Indies bowling line-up.However, Anwar responded back with his bat giving numerous match-winning performances for Pakistan over the next few years.
