English all-rounder Sam Curran returned to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after being brought by them on Day 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction. Curran previously played for CSK in 2020 and 2021.

CSK picked Sam Curran for a low price of just INR 2.40 crore. In the 2023 auction, Curran was picked by the Punjab Kings for a massive price of INR 18.50 crore. However, he was released and they did not use their RTM card this time around.

A fast-bowling all-rounder is a vital component for any T20 team and given his previous association with the franchise, CSK buying Sam Curran back is a strategic move, to say the least.

He has a decent record in the IPL, having picked up 58 wickets from 59 matches with the ball. Curran can also contribute with the bat and has scored 883 runs. His return to CSK could prove to be beneficial for the team in the upcoming seasons.

On that note, here are three reasons why Chennai signing Sam Curran is one of the best deals of the IPL 2025 auction.

#3 Solid performance with the ball in IPL 2024

Sam Curran put up a decent show with the ball last season playing for the Punjab Kings. He played 13 games and picked up 16 wickets with an average of 26 and an economy rate of 10.14.

Curran may have been slightly expensive but picking up wickets is always key, which he did last season. Overall, he has bagged 58 wickets in the IPL from 59 matches.

While his performance with the bat was average, he is still among the top-quality fast-bowling all-rounders in the international circuit at the moment. With his skills and wicket-taking abilities, he can prove to be a game-changer for CSK.

#2 CSK were in need of a fast-bowling all-rounder

With the likes of Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, Rahul Tripathi, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, and Rachin Ravindra, CSK have added decent batting options to their line-up.

In Ravichandran Ashwin and Noor Ahmad, they have two quality spinners in the squad as well. While they did rope in Vijay Shankar earlier, they still required a quality fast-bowling all-rounder and Sam Curran is the perfect choice for the franchise.

Curran can bowl in the powerplay and at the death as well and can contribute some crucial runs with the bat at the backend of the innings. Overall, Sam Curran has scored 3684 runs from 255 T20s and has grabbed 247 wickets, showing his all-round abilities in the format.

#1 Sam Curran is a steal buy at his price

After being sold for over INR 18 crore in IPL 2023, acquiring Curran at a price as low as INR 2.40 crore is certainly a steal buy as far as the Chennai Super Kings are concerned.

As mentioned earlier, a good T20 side requires quality fast-bowling all-rounders to create good balance in the side. Curran, with his experience of having played T20 cricket and international cricket as well, brings in solid skillsets.

He is known for bowling yorkers at the death and also has effective variations, which could come in handy on a wicket like the Chepauk. His batting comes as an added advantage and having brought him at such a low price, CSK have definitely walked away with one of the best deals at the auction this time around.
