MI Cape Town made a successful start to their SA20 2025 campaign, registering a 97-run win over Sunrisers Eastern Cape. While they suffered a narrow six-run defeat against the Joburg Super Kings in their next game, MI bounced back with a 33-run victory over the Paarl Royals.
MI Cape Town, with two wins and a loss from three games and nine points, are at the top of the table at the moment. They finished at the bottom last season with just three wins from ten games. In the first edition in 2023, they finished at the bottom as well, with three wins and seven defeats.
However, they have made a stellar start to their campaign this time around. With a balanced squad and momentum on their side, they appear to be among the favourites to win the SA20 2025 season. That said, here are three reasons MI Cape Town are favourites to win the title this season.
#3 In-form bowling unit
MI Cape Town possess one of the strongest bowling units this season. The likes of Trent Boult, Azmatullah Omarzai, Kagiso Rabada, and Rashid Khan have troubled opposition batters over the years.
In their first game, they bundled Sunrisers Eastern Cape out for just 77 runs and restricted Paarl Royals to 139/9 in their third game while successfully defending a total of 172 runs. Delano Potgieter (5), George Linde (4), Kagiso Rabada (4), and Trent Boult (3) are among the top five leading wicket-takers of the season so far.
In the T20 format, an in-form bowling unit is key and the side have a potent bowling attack that has delivered as a unit so far, giving them the edge over other teams.
#2 Variety of match winners in the side
MI Cape Town have a variety of match winners in the side this season in both batting and bowling departments. Experienced campaigners like Rassie van der Dussen and Reeza Hendricks have been among the runs this season.
In George Linde, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Rashid Khan, they have a solid set of all-rounders who can win them games with both the bat and the ball. This also gives the side a strong balance and flexibility with their combinations and options.
With Trent Boult and Kagiso Rabada leading their bowling attack, they also have two of the best pacers in the business.
#1 Youngsters stepping up
While MI Cape Town have several experienced senior players who have been performing well, their youngsters have also stepped up.
Dewald Brevis has been in top form, smashing a 29-ball 57 in the first game. He also scored a quickfire 9-ball 14 in their win over the Paarl Royals. South African all-rounder Delano Potgieter has been exceptional as well. '
He scored an unbeaten 12-ball 25 with the bat and also picked up five wickets in their first game. In their second game, he slammed an unbeaten 22-ball 44 while he scored 29 runs in their third game.
