Australian opener Sam Konstas has been the most trending name across all social media platforms on Boxing Day. The 19-year-old Australian debutant tore apart India's best pacer Jasprit Bumrah when 90 percent of the country was asleep.
By the time most of the Indians would wake up and google his name on the internet, he had already left a message for them to sit up and notice.
After a shaky start, Konstas slowly grew into confidence and came down hard against Bumrah. The right-hander played three audacious reverse sweeps from the ace Indian speedster's fourth over, which yielded two boundaries and a six. The New South Wales cricketer smashed 60 off 65 deliveries, laced with six boundaries and two maximums.
Sadly, the Indians won't be able to see Sam Konstas play from stadiums, as he is not a part of any teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Given his recent rise in stocks, many teams would scratch their heads for not having him at the auction.
On that note, we look at three teams Sam Konstas would have been the perfect fit for in IPL 2025.
#1 Punjab Kings
The Punjab Kings (PBKS) are one of the under-achievers in the history of the IPL. They came close to winning the title in 2014 but lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.
Punjab took strong measures at the auction to strengthen their squad for IPL 2025. However, they failed to sign a reliable opener who could partner with Prabhsimran Singh at the top. Although they have Josh Inglis in their roster, the Australian wicketkeeper-batter is not a sure-shot starter given his average returns on Indian wickets.
Sam Konstas could have bolstered the Punjab Kings batting lineup. The right-hander is known for his attacking game and could use the powerplay overs to his advantage. The 19-year-old has played two T20 games so far and scored 56 runs, including a half-century.
Besides, he also has suitors in head coach Ricky Ponting in the Punjab dressing room who is a great lover of Konstas' style of play. All in all, the New South Wales cricketer would have been a great fit at the Punjab Kings.
#2 Gujarat Titans
The 2022 IPL winners finished eighth in IPL 2024 with 10 points, including five wins and nine defeats from 14 games. They struggled mostly due to a lack of a solid opening partnership.
They have looked to build a strong squad heading into the next season of the cash-rich league. They have roped in veteran wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler who comes in with a wealth of experience.
However, the Titans lack proper backup of Buttler who can score runs at a quick pace. Having Konstas in the squad would have ensured that the franchise covered the aspect as well. He can also be a long-term option for the franchise given that he is only 19 years old.
#3 Lucknow Super Giants
The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have been one of the most consistent teams in the last few IPL seasons. However, they are yet to lift the coveted trophy.
As a result, the franchise has made some personnel changes at the auction. They let go of skipper KL Rahul and have roped in Rishabh Pant at the auction last month.
The Super Giants have built a strong squad around Pant but still lack a quality overseas opening batter. Given his stellar rise in recent times, Sam Konstas would have been an excellent option for Lucknow. They could have invested heavily in the 19-year-old who, in turn, could have gone on to represent the franchise for a very long time.
