Mumbai off-spinner Tanush Kotian has been added to the Team India squad for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The announcement comes after Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement midway through the series left a void in the squad.
Kotian has been a regular feature in the India A squads and also traveled to Australia with them before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy got underway. He also represents Mumbai in the domestic circuit and has 101 wickets to his name from 33 first-class matches. Kotian also has 22 List A and 33 T20 wickets under his belt from 21 and 33 matches, respectively.
The 26-year-old also played a crucial role in Mumbai's title-winning campaign in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier this month. He picked up nine wickets in as many matches at an economy rate of just over seven, with the best figures of 3/21.
The off-spinning all-rounder was also part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the last edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Kotian was roped in by the Royals for his base price of INR 20 lakh as Adam Zampa's replacement.
However, Kotian shockingly went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega-auction in Saudi Arabia last month. However, with stocks rising many teams would think that they missed an opportunity to sign a quality Indian spinner.
On that note, let's take a look at three teams that Tanush Kotian would have been a good fit for in IPL 2025.
#1 Rajasthan Royals
The only team Tanush Kotian has been part of in the IPL is the Rajasthan Royals (RR). He played one match for them and scored 24 runs but returned wicketless. Many would've thought Rajasthan to pick him again at the auction. However, the franchise didn't show any interest in buying him again.
Tanush Kotian would have been a good fit at RR, given that the franchise don't have a frontline Indian spinner in their ranks. Besides bowling in the middle overs, he would have been a decent option with the bat in the lower order.
#2 SunRisers Hyderabad
Kotian would have been an excellent fit for the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) given that the team lacks a frontline off-spinner in their squad.
Washington Sundar and Aiden Markram rolled over their arms whenever SRH needed an off-spinner to oversee operations. However, the SunRisers have parted ways with both players, leaving the off-spin position vacant.
Tanush Kotian, who has played all his cricket in the maidans of Mumbai, would have been a perfect cushion in between all the world-class pacers.
#3 Mumbai Indians
The five-time IPL champions had an awful campaign in IPL 2024, finishing last in the standings with only four wins in 14 matches.
The Mumbai Indians (MI) have retained their core squad and added more talents, as they look to bounce back this year. However, they lack a good Indian off-spinner in their squad.
While Will Jacks is a good option with his off-spin, he will eat up an overseas slot. Having an Indian off-spinner is an ideal option in the IPL and this is where Tanush Kotian would have been a great choice. Besides, he has plenty of experience playing at the Wankhede Stadium, which would have come in handy as well.
