12th March, 2006. South Africa and Australia were all set to play the 5th and final ODI of the series. Both the teams had won 2 matches each earlier in the series and so this match promised to be a thriller. Australia batted first and Ricky Ponting's 164 helped the Aussies score the highest team total in ODI history as they scored 434/4 in their 50 overs.

Set a target of 435 in 50 overs, nobody expected the Proteas side to win that match. However, Graeme Smith's 90 and Herschelle Gibbs' 175 kept them in the hunt. Johan van der Wath's blitzkrieg of 35 runs helped South Africa reach closer to the target and they were left requiring 2 runs to win with 1 wicket in hand and 3 balls to play.

M Ntini took a single and brought Mark Boucher on strike. The wicket-keeper batsman smashed a boundary as South Africa sealed the ODI series and also broke the record of the highest team total in ODI cricket created by the Australians earlier in the match.

South Africa scored 438/9 in the 2nd innings and won the match by 1 wicket.
