4 former CSK players who will play for Joburg Super Kings in SA20 2025 ft. Faf du Plessis 

Joburg Super Kings (JSK) are set to begin their SA20 2025 campaign on Saturday (January 11) in Johannesburg. Veteran batter Faf du Plessis will continue to lead the Super Kings, who will look to go a few steps further this season after losing the Eliminator in 2024.

As the name suggests, Joburg Super Kings and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fall under the same umbrella, owned by India Cements. So, it's natural that both teams have had a similar pool of players to maintain.

Taking CSK's IPL 2025 squad as a comparison, there are quite a few former players from the Chennai-based franchise who will represent JSK in SA20 2025. On that note, let's take a look at four of those players.

#1 Moeen Ali

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali announced his retirement from international cricket in September last year. Ali represented CSK over the last four seasons, scoring 853 runs and taking 25 wickets in 48 appearances.

He began his SA20 stint with JSK in the last edition, taking five wickets and scoring 169 runs in 11 games. The 37-year-old will be the second spin option for the side after Imran Tahir.

Possessing an experience of 366 T20 games, Moeen Ali has amassed 7,103 runs and scalped 240 wickets. He will be a crucial player for the side this season.

#2 Faf du Plessis

One of the finest overseas batters to play in the IPL, Faf du Plessis commands respect due to his ability to contribute consistently. The top-order batter played in 98 games for CSK from 2012 to 2021 and amassed 2,721 runs at an average of 35.34, with 20 fifties. He slammed 633 runs in the IPL 2021 season to help the side claim their fourth IPL title.

Meanwhile, Faf has been leading the JSK side over the last two seasons. He has accumulated 608 runs in 22 appearances at a strike rate of 145.10, with a century and five fifties, for them.

The 40-year-old led the St Lucia Kings to a title victory in the Caribbean Premier League 2024 while scoring 405 runs in 12 games. With 10,950 runs in 393 T20 games, Faf du Plessis will look to continue his good form in possibly his last SA20 season.

#3 Imran Tahir

The 45-year-old has been part of numerous franchise leagues since last playing for South Africa in the 2019 World Cup. Imran Tahir was a part of the CSK side from 2017 to 2021, where he scalped 35 wickets in 27 games. His best tally came in the 2019 season, where he finished with 26 dismissals as the side emerged as the runners-up.

Tahir took nine wickets in 11 games at an economy of 7.61 for JSK in SA20 last year. He played an important role in taking the Guyana Amazon Warriors to the CPL 2024 final, with 16 wickets in 11 appearances.

With 526 T20 wickets in 420 games, Tahir has been sensational in terms of his wicket-taking skills.

#4 Maheesh Theekshana

Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana operates intelligently in T20s, with variations like carrom ball, wrong'un and sliders, to rattle the batters. Theekshana was a part of the CSK setup in the last three seasons, where he picked up 25 wickets in 27 games at an economy of 7.66.

He finished with 11 dismissals in IPL 2023, which saw CSK lifting their fifth title.

Theekshana was part of the JSK side in the first edition of SA20 (2023). He picked up seven wickets in as many games at a miserly economy of 6.88.
