In the finals of the Triangular series involving Zimbabwe in 2005, India were pitted against New Zealand team. Kaif was in a terrific form and scored a century and a half-century in the series, entering the final. In the final, Kaif came up big once again and scored an unbeaten 93 off 110 accompanied by eight fours. However, India only managed to make 276 before they got all out.

The Kiwis chased it down without any problem, on the back of a brilliant century from Nathan Astle. Kaif ended the series as the highest run-scorer for India with 277 runs in five innings at a brilliant average of 92.33.
