Indian Premier League became a huge hit because of its carnival style T20 matches. The league developed a huge fan following in the first season itself.
Statistically referring, the IPL received a total attendance of 34,22,500 in the first 59 matches which shows how grand the event was. One of the main reasons behind it was the participation of the grand players like MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly.
Each player was signed by a franchise for a 3 year’s contract starting from 2008 to 2010. 8 teams battled among each other for bidding on their home players out of which only some got successful. After 3 years, the choice was left to the franchise to retain their old players or to release them ahead of the next season.
The legendary player Sachin Tendulkar was retained by his home franchise Mumbai Indians. And on the other hand, some franchises chose to release their home players for the next season of the IPL.
This list contains the name of those players who were released by their home franchise after IPL 2010.
#4 Rahul Dravid (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
Royal Challengers Bangalore has remained as the unluckiest side in the history of Indian Premier League. Despite reaching the finals thrice, they have not been successful in lifting even a single title in the last 11 years. However, they have always had the upper hand in terms of having high-quality players in their side.
Karnataka-born Rahul Dravid played the first 3 editions of IPL for this side. He even got the chance to captain his side during these years but somehow the team could not win the trophy. Nicknamed as the Wall, Dravid scored 898 runs in these 3 editions which included his personal best score of 75 runs.
However, it seemed like this performance from their homeboy was not up to the mark as expected by the RCB’s management, which led to Dravid’s release from the side. He was later on bought by the Rajasthan Royals for the next editions of IPL.
#3 VVS Laxman (Deccan Chargers)
Deccan Chargers was one of the 8 franchises to take part in the first edition of Indian Premier League which took place in the year 2008. It was a side that represented the Hyderabad city which won its first title in the year 2009.
Led by Adam Gilchrist, Deccan Chargers won their first IPL title in the year 2009 with some master-class players like VVS Laxman, RP Singh and Andrew Symonds in their squad.
VVS Laxman was expected to be the most integral part of Deccan line-up while batting in the middle-order for his side. He also had a double benefit as he was a local boy from Hyderabad and was playing for his home franchise only.
However, Deccan dropped all the players for the fourth edition of IPL which even included VVS Laxman. Hence, he moved to Kochi Tuskers Kerala side in the year 2011.
#2 Yuvraj Singh (Kings XI Punjab)
Yuvraj Singh has remained as one of the star players of India, especially in the T20 format. It is the format in which he can be brutally dangerous as he prefers to slog every ball he faces. This was the main reason for which Kings XI Punjab bought him for 3 years from 2008 to 2010. His 6 sixes and his home connection with Punjab also favoured him in playing for his home side in IPL.
Yuvi smashed the total of 69 fours and 49 sixes during these 3 years, along with scoring 894 runs for his side. But Punjab’s team management was not quite happy with his performances as they released him for the next edition of IPL. However, they again bought him in the year 2018 just to release him after a string of poor performances.
#1 Sourav Ganguly (Kolkata Knight Riders)
Sourav Ganguly, also known as Dada had played the lead role for India in the history of cricket. He was the cornerstone for India during the 2003 World Cup. In the same way, he also proved to be a good T20 player which reflected in his form in IPL while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders.
The southpaw played the first 3 editions of IPL for his home side, Kolkata, from 2008 to 2010. He even captained his side which is a matter of pride. He scored 1031 runs for Kolkata in this 3 editions which even included his career best score of 91 runs in 2008.
But, Kolkata left him for the next edition of Indian Premier League which led to Ganguly being under the hammer in the auction list. He was later on bought by Pune based franchise for the 4th edition of IPL which even featured Yuvraj Singh.
