Mohammad Azharuddin is one of the most successful batsmen to have ever played for India. The Hyderabadi used his wrist at the last second to collect boundaries and was a delight to watch. He took India over the line with some wonderful innings on numerous occasions and will forever be remembered for his services to Indian cricket.
India hosted Sri Lanka for a 3-match Test series in 1986. In the first Test, the visitors won the toss and chose to bowl first. They managed to score a competitive total of 420, on the back of Ravi Ratnayeke's 93.
In reply, India got a beautiful start from stalwart Sunil Gavaskar who ended the innings with 176. However, it was Azharuddin who stole the limelight with a terrific knock. He stroked his way to 199 but failed to score his maiden double-century as he got dismissed by Ratnayake. Azhar never scored a double-century in his career and this was the closest he ever came to scoring one. The match was drawn and India then went on to win the next two Tests and clinch the series 2-0.
