Sanath Jayasuriya was known for his magnificent hand-eye coordination and demolished the bowlers for runs all around the park. The southpaw played with an aggressive approach and always took the attack to the bowler. He demoralized the bowlers very early in the innings and helped Sri Lanka post huge totals.
India visited Sri Lanka for a 2-match Test series under the captaincy of Sachin Tendulkar. The first Test was a run-fest as India scored 537-8 before they declared. The hosts in their first innings went on to score a record 952 runs for the fall of six wickets before declaring. Sanath Jayasuriya registered his highest ever individual score of 340 and the match ended in a draw.
The focus then shifted to the second and the final Test of the series. The visitors won the toss and chose to bowl first. Sri Lanka got all-out for 332 in their first innings. India then went on to score 375 in their first innings and earned a 43 run lead.
In the second innings, Jayasuriya took over and wrecked havoc on the Indian bowlers and scored 199 off 226 balls. This included 21 fours and 2 sixes. He was bowled by Abey Kuruvilla on the fourth day and missed out on what would have been his second double-century. The match was drawn and Jayasuriya ended the series scoring 571 runs in just 3 innings at a breath-taking average of 190.33.
