India-Australia share one of the biggest rivalries in world cricket and that has been so ever since that Test match in Melbourne in 1981. However, the Test series between India and Australia did not have a name till 1996, when it was christened the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

It is apt that the series has been named after two of the most prolific batsmen in the game and two legendary cricketers of either country.

Sunil Gavaskar was the first to reach the tally of 10,000 runs in Test cricket and Allan Border was the one who broke that record. India won the one-off Test series at home and since then it has been one of the most competitive, volatile, controversial series in the cricketing itinerary.

Along the way, some of the best cricketers in the world have gone head to head with one another in some of the most absorbing Test cricket played in the last 2 decades.

In the 13 series played so far, India have won 7, Australia have won 5 and another one in Australia back in 2003-04 was drawn. India are the current holders of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, having won the Test series earlier this year. The teams square off again in 2018 in Australia.
