He led the Indian ODI side for a long time and achieved a lot of success with them. He was a vital cog in India's middle-order and carried the team on his shoulders and led them to numerous victories in the 1990s.

Out of the 338 ODIs he played, he scored 58 half-centuries but only seven centuries, out of which none of them were scored in England. Most of his centuries were scored in India itself.
