With 2024 coming to an end, it's time for 2025 to open its Pandora's box of surprises and upsets that the cricketing world has to offer. The calendar for this year is all stacked up with major international tournaments/series, and promises to enthrall fans with competitive cricket.
Although the franchise leagues will still hold importance, international cricket has much more to offer this year. Several high-profile tournaments among men's and women's cricket is sure to keep the cricket fraternity busy, which sets up an exciting year for the cricket fans.
On that note, let's take a look at the five key international events which are expected to witness thrilling action in 2025.
#1 Champions Trophy
The eight-team Champions Trophy will take place in February-March 2025 in Pakistan and UAE. The last edition of the tournament took place in 2017, with Pakistan emerging as the champions.
The tournament was caught up in an impasse after India refused to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns. However, the ICC managed to get Pakistan to adopting the hybrid model, resulting in India slated to play all their games in Dubai.
With much controversy around the tournament, the marquee event will witness tensions running high between teams to stake their claim for the big prize.
#2 Women’s ODI World Cup
The Women's ODI World Cup will take place in August-September 2025 in India and a neutral venue. The agreements between PCB and BCCI will be carried forward in this tournaments as well, with the Women in Green (if they qualify) playing at a neutral venue.
So far, five teams, India, Australia, England, South Africa and Sri Lanka have qualified for the tournament. The rest of the three spots are up for grabs, with one of them being decided on the basis of the 2022–2025 ICC Women's Championship and the other two will be finalized through the World Cup Qualifier.
#3 WTC Final
Currently, the biggest prize a Test-playing-nation can achieve is the World Test Championship (WTC) glory. The top two teams in a two-year cycle qualify for the finale, which decides the winner of the tournament.
South Africa recently became the first team to qualify for the WTC 2023-25 final, which is scheduled to be played from June 11-15 at Lord's in London. The likes of Australia, India and Sri Lanka are involved in a tussle to secure the final spot. This month will clear out all the doubts about the team slated to clash with Proteas for the ultimate prize.
#4 Asia Cup
The biennial tournament will take place in India and UAE in October-November 2025. It will be played in a T20 format, with the 2026 T20 World Cup around the corner.
A total of 13 games are scheduled to take place in a six-team competition. The last edition took place in 2023, which saw India emerging as the champion for the eighth time. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka gained automatic qualification to the tournament.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates earned the spot by winning the 2024 ACC Men's Premier Cup.
#5 Ashes 2025
One of the most heated rivalries will come alive when Australia host England in the Ashes 2025. The five-match series will take place from November to January in the five Test centers across Australia.
The last edition of the series took place in 2023, and ended as a 2-2 draw. It will also assume more importance after being part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.
England will look to reclaim the Ashes on Australian soil once again, a feat they haven't achieved since the 2010-11 edition.
