The two hit the headlines when they indulged in a heated on-field exchange. Gambhir played a shot towards short third-man and while completing a single, he collided with Shahid Afridi on his way.
As a result, both charged towards each other, causing a verbal duel in which abuses were also traded. The umpire Ian Gould was forced to mediate between Afridi and Gambhir, who were later fined by the match referee.
