Australian pacer Scott Boland impressed yet again with his impeccable bowling performance in the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. The 35-year-old troubled the Indian batters, picking up 21 wickets from just six innings at an average of 13.19.
Not many are aware of the fact that Scott Boland also once featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL). During the 2016 season, he was a part of the Rising Pune SuperGiants (RPSG) team. However, Boland played just two matches and picked up two wickets at an average of 27 and an economy rate of 7.71. He played against the Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians (MI).
More interestingly, several high-profile names were Boland's teammates and played in the IPL with him in those two games. On that note, let's look at five players who you may not know played with the Australian pacer during the 2016 IPL season.
5 players you didn’t know played in the IPL with Scott Boland
#5 Ajinkya Rahane
Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane, who will feature for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming IPL season, played alongside Scott Boland in the 2016 season. Boland played in the 33rd match between RPSG and the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals)
Rahane scored an unbeaten 63 in that match as RPSG chased down 163 runs, winning the game by seven wickets. He was also awarded the 'Player of the Match' for his brilliant knock. Rahane also played the match against Mumbai Indians but scored only four runs.
#4 Usman Khawaja
Australian batter and Scott Boland's teammate during the BGT 2024-25 series, Usman Khawaja was also his teammate during the IPL 2016 game against Delhi Daredevils.
While Rahane took charge during the chase, Khawaja played second fiddle, scoring a crucial 27-ball 30 in a 59-run opening stand. However, he did manage to hit a couple of fours and a six in his innings.
Not many know that Khawaja was also a part of the IPL along with Boland. Khawaja did not play the MI game with Boland though.
#3 Ravichandran Ashwin
All-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, who recently announced retirement from Test cricket, also shared the dressing room and the field with Scott Boland in the 2016 IPL.
In the game against Delhi, Ashwin did not pick up a wicket. However, he played a key role in helping Boland pick up his maiden IPL wicket. Boland dismissed Sanju Samson in the game, who was his first wicket in the league.
Interestingly, it was Ashwin who took Samson's catch. The spinner also played the MI game with the Australian speedster.
#2 Faf du Plessis
South African batter Faf du Plessis also represented Rising Pune SuperGiants during the 2016 season. Faf played only six matches that year, scoring just 206 runs including two half-centuries.
Unfortunately, he did not play the games against Delhi and Mumbai, thus not sharing the field with Boland. However, as both players were a part of the squad, they did share the same dressing room throughout their respective time in the 2016 edition.
#1 MS Dhoni
Scott Boland also shared the field and dressing room with legendary former Indian captain MS Dhoni. During the 2016 season, RPSG were led by Dhoni himself. The veteran wicket-keeper batter scored 27 runs in the game against the Daredevils and 24 runs in the game against Mumbai.
Boland made his IPL debut under the leadership of Dhoni and therefore, also picked up his maiden wicket in the league under Dhoni's captaincy. His only two games in the cash-rich league came under Dhoni.
