#2 Ajinkya Rahane
There can be little doubt that Ajinkya Rahane is India's most consistent Test batsman. An away average in excess of 50 is proof of just how impressive he has been in Tests. But he makes it into this list because of a home season in which he struggled to come to grips with the turn and bounce, scoring just a solitary century in 11 matches.
On the back of an impressive series in West Indies, where he averaged 121.50, a lot was expected of India's backbone in the middle-order. But barring one knock of 188 against New Zealand, which was also his career-best Test score, he struggled throughout the season, scoring just three fifties in 11 matches.
Overall, he finished the season with an average of under 40, which is well below his career average in the format. His poor form even prompted a few to question whether he should be a regular in the Indian side, but both Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli, laughed off any suggestion of dropping him on the back of a few bad games and they were vindicated as he captained India in the final Test of the season against Australia to a series victory.
