The former Sri Lankan skipper has often been made as the scapegoat for his team's failures at the highest level. Sri Lankan team have performed way below par in the recent times in almost every series that they played. The team has failed to perform as a unit and have bowed against some top quality sides.

After their early exit from the Asia Cup, where Mathews took the charge of the team, he was shown the way out from the ODI squad for the ongoing series against England. A dismal performance from the team was accompanied by an equally outing with the bat for Mathews, and hence making him the culprit for all that didn't go the Sri Lankan way.

It is highly certain that the veteran will fail to make it to the World Cup squad pertaining to his lean patch of runs and the lack of agility as a fielder.
