Martin Guptill announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday, January 8. The 38-year-old made his debut for New Zealand in January 2009 during an ODI against the West Indies. Throughout his career, Guptill played 198 ODIs, scoring 7,346 runs at an average of 41.73, including 39 fifties and 18 centuries.
He also played 47 Tests for the Blackcaps, accumulating 2,586 runs, with 17 fifties and three centuries. In addition, Guptill represented New Zealand in 122 T20Is, scoring 3,531 runs, including 20 fifties and two hundreds. His final international appearance came in 2022 in a T20I match against Bangladesh.
Reflecting on his career, the 38-year-old shared his thoughts in a statement issued by NZC:
“As a young kid, it was always my dream to play for New Zealand and I feel incredibly lucky and proud to have played 367 games for my country. I will forever cherish the memories made wearing the silver fern alongside a great group of guys.”
“I want to say a huge thanks to all my team-mates and coaching staff over the years, in particular Mark O’Donnell who has coached me since the Under 19 level and been a source of ongoing support and wisdom over my career. A special thanks must also go to my manager Leanne McGoldrick - all of the work behind the scenes never went unnoticed and I’ll be forever appreciative of all your support," he added.
Martin Guptill also shared a message for his family and supporters:
“To my wife Laura and our beautiful children Harley and Teddy – thank you. Thank you Laura for the sacrifices you have made for me and our family. You’ve been my biggest supporter, my rock, and my counsel through all of the ups and downs that come with the game. I am eternally grateful. Finally, I’d like to thank all the cricket fans, here in NZ and around the world for all their support throughout the years.”

Martin Guptill remains New Zealand's top run-scorer in T20I cricket. The explosive batter played 122 T20Is for the Black Caps, amassing 3,531 runs at an average of 31.81 and a strike rate of 135.70. He also registered 20 fifties and two centuries, with his highest score being 105 against Australia in 2018.
Overall, he ranks fifth on the all-time list of T20I run-scorers, behind Rohit Sharma (4,231), Babar Azam (4,223), Virat Kohli (4,188), and Paul Stirling (3,655).
#2 First player to score an ODI double century for NZ
Martin Guptill made history as the first New Zealand player to score a double century in ODI cricket. He achieved this remarkable feat in the quarter-final of the 2015 World Cup against the West Indies.
The opening batter remained unbeaten on 237 from 163 balls, striking 24 boundaries and 11 sixes, as the Black Caps posted a total of 393. New Zealand went on to win the match by 143 runs.
Guptill's 237* remains the highest score by any player in a World Cup match, and he is still the only New Zealand batter to have scored a double century in ODIs.
#3 Martin Guptill holds the record for the two highest individual scores in ODIs for New Zealand
While Martin Guptill’s unbeaten 237 against the West Indies remains the highest individual score by a New Zealand batter in ODIs, he also holds the record for the second-highest score. In 2013, during a match against England, Guptill scored an impressive 189* off 155 balls, including 19 boundaries and two sixes.
Ross Taylor follows in third place with an unbeaten 181 against England in 2018. Guptill also features in fourth place with his 180* against South Africa in 2017. Lou Vincent rounds out the top five with a score of 172 against Zimbabwe in 2005.
#4 Fastest New Zealander to score 7,000 ODI runs
Only four New Zealand batters have surpassed 7,000 ODI runs: Ross Taylor, Stephen Fleming, Martin Guptill, and Nathan Astle. Among them, Guptill is the fastest to reach this milestone in terms of innings, achieving it in 186 innings, while Ross Taylor took 188 innings.
Guptill ranks third on the all-time ODI run-scorer list for the Black Caps, with 7,346 runs, trailing Ross Taylor (8,607) and Stephen Fleming (8,007).
#5 Most sixes by a New Zealand player in T20Is, second overall
Martin Guptill ended his career as New Zealand’s highest run-scorer in T20Is. He also holds the record for the most sixes by a Black Caps player in the format, with 173 sixes.
