21-year-old Nitish Kumar Reddy made history in Melbourne with his maiden Test hundred, achieving it on Day 3 (Saturday, December 28) of the ongoing fourth Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test. The youngster, under pressure, played a magnificent knock, leading India's fightback. He brought up his maiden Test ton in style, smacking a boundary off Scott Boland to get to the landmark.
As the day ended, Nitish Kumar Reddy remained unbeaten on 105 off 176 deliveries, scoring 10 fours and a six in his historic knock. The all-rounder helped India finish the day on 358/9 as the visitors trail by 116 runs.
Nitish had showcased his ability with the bat earlier in this series but a big score was due, given his performances. The right-hander got in nicely and ensured to convert his start into a big score this time around.
As he recorded his maiden Test hundred at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), he also made a plethora of records en route to his terrific century.

#5 Only 3rd youngest player to score Test century batting at 8 or lower
Nitish Kumar Reddy is exactly 21 years and 216 days old at the time of scoring his Test century in Melbourne. The all-rounder walked in to bat at No.8 and is now only the third youngest player to have scored a Test hundred batting at 8 or below.
Only two other players have scored Test hundreds batting at No.8 or below, younger than Reddy at the time. India's Ajay Ratra was 20 years and 150 days old when he achieved the feat.
Bangladesh's Abul Hasan (20 years and 108 days old at the time) is the second youngest player to have scored a Test hundred batting at 8 or below.
#4 3rd youngest Indian to score Test century for India in Australia
Nitish Kumar Reddy is also the third youngest Indian to score a Test hundred in Australia. Only Sachin Tendulkar and Rishabh Pant are ahead of him on this list. Tendulkar was 18 years and 256 days old when he scored his first Test hundred for India in Australia in Sydney in 1992.
Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant also scored a Test hundred in Sydney in 2019 and was 21 years and 92 days old at the time. Nitish, who scored his ton in Melbourne, achieved the feat aged 21 years and 216 days.
Dattu Phadkar is the only other Indian on the list, who was 22 years and 46 days old when he scored a Test hundred in Adelaide in 1948.
#3 First batter to hit a Test hundred at No.8 in Melbourne
Walking in to bat at No.8 and scoring a ton, Nitish Kumar Reddy is now the first ever batter to have scored a Test hundred batting at the position at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
No other batter has achieved this feat batting at No.8 in a Test match in Melbourne, further making his achievement a special one. Additionally, he is also only the fifth batter to hit a Test hundred in Australia (across venues) batting at No.8 or lower.
Gerry Alexander (1961), Adam Parore (2001), Matt Prior (2011), and Yasir Shah (2019) are the only four other batters to have done so before Reddy.
#2 Most sixes in a single Test series in Australia by an Indian
Nitish Kumar Reddy has not shied away from taking the attack to bowlers in this series. He has hit some iconic shots and sixes throughout the tour. He has now scored 8 sixes in this series so far.
With that, he became the first Indian batter to hit eight sixes in a single Test series in Australia. He also now has the record for the joint most sixes hit by a visiting batter in a single Test series in Australia.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan (2002-03) and Chris Gayle (2009-10) are the only other batters to hit eight sixes in a single Test series in Australia.
#1 Highest score by an Indian at No.8 or below in Tests in Australia
With his 105*, Nitish Kumar Reddy also broke the record for the highest score by an Indian at No.8 or below in Tests in Australia. The record was previously held by the legendary spinner Anil Kumble, who had scored 87 runs batting at No.8 in Adelaide in 2008.
Ravindra Jadeja (81 in Sydney 2019), Kiran More (67* in Melbourne 1991), and Shardul Thakur (67 in Brisbane 2021) are the other batters on the list.
