Bagging the honour of being the first Australian to take a hat-trick and finish on the losing side is all-rounder Daniel Christian. What made it even worse Christian was the fact that he was ably assisted by James Pattinson, who took four wickets and had fifties from captain Shane Watson and David Hussey.

At the MCG in 2012, Sri Lanka looked on course for a big total with Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne going great guns. But after Pattinson got rid of the former, Christian took over as he ran through the lower middle order.

Mathews went first but it was the fall of Thisara Perera, which started the hat-trick. Two more wickets in the next two balls meant he not only became the fourth Australian to take an ODI hat-trick but also recorded his career-best ODI bowling figures and restricted Sri Lanka to 238. In reply, the all-rounder fell cheaply but it also didn't help that only four players got into double digits for Australia as they eventually lost by 9 runs.
