The issue surrounding mismanagement and corruption of the Delhi cricket administration continues to be murkied, as Virat Kohli was dragged into the scam, and it was pointed out that even he had experienced the sort of unruliness that prevailed over cricket in Delhi.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on December 31 used an interview of current India captain Virat Kohli to prove the spoilt state of affairs in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) at the time when it had been headed by current Union Finance Minister of India Arun Jaitley.
AAP claims that in an interview on December 18, Kohli said that his father was asked for a favour to get him into the state side while Arun Jaitley was the DDCA chief, an offer which his father refused.
Interestingly, many Delhi players, including Virat Kohli, had come out in support of Mr. Jaitley after the charges were levelled against him over alleged corruptions in the DDCA.
I was asked for a favour to get into the Under-14 team: Kohli
AAP leader Ashutosh said, “In the press conference yesterday DDCA’s acting president Chetan Chauhan said that the DDCA has produced players like Virat Kohli who captained Team India. They also claim that Virat Kohli has come out in praise of Mr. Arun Jaitley. But in an interview on December 18 in a national daily, the same player said that he was asked for a favour to get into him into the Under-14 Team. This was dismissed by his father. And Mr. Jaitley was the President of the DDCA. This reflects that there were irregularities in the selection of the team.”
On December 30 AAP had accused Mr. Jaitley of putting pressure on the then Delhi Police Commissioner to “stop” the investigation involving a cricket club’s bank in 2011. Suspended BJP MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad claimed the SFIO probe report had recommended his “prosecution”.
Mr. Ashutosh added, “By trying to shield those involved in the DDCA irregularities as the Leader of Opposition, Mr. Jaitley has committed a constitutional crime, an offence against the country.”
This claim gives the DDCA scam a new twist, and by using Virat Kohli’s reference, AAP have showed that they are not unwilling to go to any quarters to gain mileage from the scam involving the central minister.
