Alex Hales deserves the fine says England assistant coach Farbrace

Alex Hales has not been in the best of form recently

England’s assistant coach Paul Farbrace has admitted that Alex Hales deserved to be punished for storming into the match referee’s office on Friday and having a spat with match officials.Hales was fined 15 percent of his match fee by match referee Richie Richardson for showing dissent on third umpire Joel Wilson who gave him out caught in the first innings of the third Test against Pakistan.

Hales was picked up by Yasir Shah at midwicket on the first morning and the onfield umpires too were sure the catch was clean. Nonetheless, they referred t to Wilson who could not overturn the decision of the onfield umpires as the replays were quite blurry. Halez walked out disgusted, mumbling to himself and after removing his pads he walked into the match referee’s office to vent out his anger.

“We would not have advised him to go and share his thoughts on the dismissal. That is not the brightest thing to do,” Farbrace said.“When you are mid-game do you need to upset the umpires? You work very hard on having a good relationship with umpires so the last thing you need to do then is go and kick the door off its hinges and tell the third umpire he has made a mistake because ultimately it is only going to make a difference to your bank balance.”

Hales’s rudeness cost him 1,500 GBP and he suffered more humiliation when he dropped a sitter at gully of Chris Woakes. The drop set the tone for a disastrous session for England as they missed easy chances.

Steven Finn grassed one off his own bowling and a sharp chance flew past James Anderson at slip. England despite working hard on their fielding have dropped 14 catches in the series so far.

“We are missing chances and we have been saying that for quite some time. Concentration must be an element,” said Farbrace. “The first one that Halesy dropped can only be concentration. The caught and bowled for Finny was a tough one for a big fella but they are catches you expect to be caught. If we are serious about being the number one team in the world, and we think we are a long way off that at the moment, then you have to catch your catches and take the half chances to keep opposition under pressure.”

“All the way through this summer we have let sessions slip by not taking our chances. I would like to think what we (coaches) are doing is good but when it comes to lack of concentration and missing opportunities there is not a lot we can do about that other than keep practicing and working hard. We are working technically with every player and give each one individual time.”
