Australia recall Ashton Agar for the final Test against India

Ashton Agar

Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar has earned a recall to the 13-man Test squad for the fourth and final Test against India, at Sydney, starting on January 6. The 21-year-old last represented his country in whites in July 2013 and is best remembered for scoring 98 with the bat coming in as a number 11 against England in his debut Test match at Trent Bridge.

Australia have now regained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after the third Test, at Melbourne, ended in a draw, and with the pitch at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) known to offer some help for spinners, he could be in with a chance to play his first Test for Australia in over a year.

Former Australian captain and three-time World Cup winner Ricky Ponting has been keeping a watch on the youngster and had earlier said that Agar could be a surprise selection for the World Cup starting in February.

."I would actually throw Ashton Agar's name in there as a bit of a smokey,” he was quoted as being said by the Cricket Australia(CA) website

"I haven't talked much about this before but I was just looking and thinking about what they might do with a spinner for the World Cup, and we know that Agar's a very handy lower batsman and a good fielder as well.

"I think he's someone who could slot into a World Cup one-day side really nicely," he added.

Here’s a tweet confirming the news.
