Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has come in for special praise for his performance in the current Ashes series in England. His performance has been top-notch and his tally of wickets is at par with the second highest wicket-taker of the series.
Lyon is no Shane Warne, but it may surprise some people that he has recently taken over the former Australian great Hugh Trumble in his Test wickets tally. His role has not been limited to just cleaning up the tail after the fast bowlers are done with leading batsmen. In fact, he has been consistently troubling the accomplished batsmen.
Lyon was particularly lethal in England’s first innings of the Edgbaston Test. He nicked the crucial scalps of Alastair Cook and Ian Bell along with troubling Moeen Ali time and again.
The world’s number 2 off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was very emphatic in his appreciation of Lyon.
The Indian praised Lyon for making changes in his technique to adjust to the English conditions. Ashwin said, “I really like some of the aspects of Nathan Lyon, not just technically. To see someone like him make a change in international cricket - I've not seen many international cricketers do it - it was pleasing for me because from a spinner’s point of view it's that much harder playing away from home.”
Ashwin further added that the improved release by Lyon has added another shot to his armoury and now he is a complete spinner. Let’s hope the other Indian spinners are listening!
