Rajasthan Royals (RR) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by four wickets in the 66th match of IPL 2023 on Friday, May 19, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala.

After being asked to bat first, PBKS managed to notch up 187/5 in 20 overs. Punjab top-order batters hit a few boundaries and gave a brisk start to their side but perished quickly without converting their starts.

As a result, PBKS slumped to 50/4 in 6.3 overs. Sam Curran (49*), Jitesh Sharma (44), and Shahrukh Khan (41*) played well in the remaining overs to help Punjab Kings to a respectable total on a decent surface. Navdeep Saini was the pick of RR bowlers as he scalped three wickets.

During the chase, Jos Buttler departed for a four-ball duck as PBKS got off to a good start. Yashasvi Jaiswal (50) and Devdutt Padikkal (51) then hit fluent half-centuries to lay down the platform for the visiting side in the chase.

Shimron Hetmyer (46) and Riyan Parag (20) played vital cameos to take Rajasthan near to the target. Dhruv Jurel (10*) then finished the match in style with a six in the final over.

PBKS captain Shikhar Dhawan reflected on their loss after the match, saying:

"We lost the game while batting. Jitesh, Curran and Shahrukh got us back in the game. The bowlers did a good job again but the fielding wasn't great. We dropped a few catches and gave away a few runs, which cost us a game. 200-215 should have been a good total. I feel that in all the areas, we could have done better."

He added:

"I'm sure the boys learned a lot and even I did, as a leader. You learn from the mistakes you make. [Usage of his bowlers today] Today we ended up in that position because we knew we had to take the game deep. So, the last over went to Rahul and when there was not much turn, it was difficult for him. Even in the last game, I gave Brar the last over, so that's a learning experience for me."
