Cricket Australia (CA) have finalised the dates and venues for the four-match Test series against India, with the first Test starting at Adelaide on December 9. Brisbane was originally slated to host the first Test on December 4, before the tragic death of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes led to the postponement of the game.
Hughes passed away at St. Vincent’s Hospital on Thursday after being hit on his head by a bouncer from Sean Abbott during a Sheffield Shield game at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on November 25. The left-hander’s funeral will take place at his hometown Macksville on December 3, which will also be attended by India’s stand-in captain Virat Kohli.
CA, while confirming the deferral of the first Test, had stated that hosting the first game only a day after Hughes’ funeral would neither be “feasible nor be morally right”. It meant the Australian cricket board had to come up with a revised schedule, which they have:
Test | Venue | Date |
First Test | Adelaide | Dec 9-13 |
Second Test | Brisbane | Dec 17-21 |
Third Test | Melbourne | Dec 26-30 |
Fourth Test | Sydney | Jan 6-10 |
India will also play a two-day practice game that starts on December 4 as compensation for the cancelled game against Cricket Australia Invitational XI, again due to the freakish Hughes incident.
