His fellow opener Jonny Bairstow, who scored 60 off 56, then stepped up and stitched a 117-run partnership with Alex Hales (57) to consolidate England's position.
Both Hales and Bairstow smashed Australian bowlers for boundaries and went on to complete their half-centuries.
The platform set by Bairstow and Hales proved vital for England as Joe Root and Chris Woakes led the tourists to a comprehensive 4-wicket win with 34 balls remaining.
