Australia vs New Zeland, 1st Match, ICC CT 2002
The first ICC CT clash between Australia and New Zealand was on 15 September at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo, Sri Lanka in the 2002 Champions Trophy. Both teams were the members of Pool 1 in that edition and their match was the opening match of that edition. Australia won the toss and chose to bat first. They scored 296/7 in 50 overs. New Zealand failed to reach the target and reached 132 in 26.2 overs. Glenn McGrath was declared the Player of the Match.

Australia faced New Zealand again in the 2004 ICC CT on 16 September at The Oval, London in a group stage match. Both teams were members of Group A in that edition. Australia again won the toss and chose to bowl first. New Zealand scored 198/9 in 50 overs and Australia reached the target 37.2 overs. Andrew Symonds was awarded the Man of the Match.

Australia lifted their second ICC Champions Trophy in 2009 by beating their rivals New Zealand in the finals. They faced each other on 5 October at SuperSport Park, Centurion.
