Trent Copeland captured 5/47 off 20 overs in his first appearance in Australian colours as Australia restricted SL Board XI to 258 on first day in warm-up game prior to the Test Series.
Medium paced NSW star Copeland managed to get 3 test regulars in the Sri Lankan batting line-up as his probing line caused problems to the Lankan batsmen. This was his 5th Five-for in 18 First class games, further testament to his Glenn McGrath-esque approach
Copeland claimed the first three wickets to fall and from 170-3, SL XI ended up with a disappointing 258 after Thisara Perera and Dammika Prasad put on 50 for the last wicket.
On a humid day in Colombo, SL XI won the toss and elected to bat on a bear pitch. Openers Paranavitana an Thirimanne put up a painful 82 for the first wicket but both were victims of the very accurate Copeland. Test discard Dinesh Chandimal was the only batsmen to score a fifty eventually falling to Ryan Harris.
Brad Haddin collected five catches behind the stumps including a superb take diving to his left to dismiss Thirimanne.
Michael Beer and Nathan Lyon both bowled on the day, sharing three wickets between them.Beer is the favourite to play in Galle but Nathan Lyon may put his case with a strong second innings showing.Lyon handsomely flighted the ball inducing misses from left-handers but was taken for 71 off 21 overs.Peter Siddle was the only wicket-less bowler, pushing Copeland’s case for a test debut further.
Australia raced to 26/0 before stumps were called with Phil Hughes scorching 5 boundaries off Dammika Prasad.Captain Angelo Mathews opted for off-spinner Dilruwan Perera to open the bowling, clearly showing Sri Lanka’s gameplan versus the tourists.Hughes’s partner Usman Khawaja was 2*.
Australia will look to give their 6 batsmen some practice before the first test on 31st with Marsh and Khawaja trying to secure the No 6 batting slot.Australia will cast the onus on their two spinners to make an impact in the second innings as a turning deck is expected in Galle.
