The late wickets of the well-set Tamim Iqbal and Shakib-Al-Hasan restricted Bangladesh to 228/5 in 54.4 overs and swung the rain-curtailed first day of the second Test match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, in favour of New Zealand.

Earlier in the day, Tamim Iqbal made complete use of a lackluster effort from New Zealand fielders, who dropped a couple of easy chances, and went on to score an attractive 153-ball 95. He was eventually dismissed when he tried to cut a Neil Wagner delivery too close to him only to be brilliantly caught at gully by Kane Williamson.

With the exception of Anamul Haque, who miscued a pull shot off Trent Boult when he was on 7 runs, all the other Bangladeshi batsmen got off to a fine start. But none of them were able to go on and make it substantial enough to pose any threat for New Zealand.

Marshall Ayub (41) was late onto the shot to see his woodwork disturbed by Wagner while Mominul Haque (47) edged a short harmless delivery from Corey Anderson to the wicketkeeper.

Shakib-Al-Hasan was the last wicket to fall on the day, trapped lbw by Ish Sodhi, while attempting a sweep shot. Heavy rains made no further play possible.

The visitors have definitely got the advantage with only two recognized batsman in Mushfiqur Rahim (14* off 12) and Nasir Hossain at the crease. The first Test match between the two sides at Chittagong was a high scoring draw.
