Cape Cobras’ JP Duminy has been ruled out of the ongoing Champions League T20 tournament owing to a knee injury that he sustained during the triangular ODI series in Zimbabwe.
It remains to be seen whether the Cobras will be seeking a replacement for the experienced T20 star. The Justin Ontong led-team, who lost to Dolphins in the final of Ram Slam T20 tournament 2014, will open their campaign agianst the in-form New Zealand side Northern Knights on September 19, which topped the qualifing group winning 3 out of 3.
With Sunil Narine and Jacques Kallis opting to represent Kolkata Knight Riders and pacer Beuran Hendricks, the leading wicket-taker this year in the domestic T20 competition, already ruled out with a back stress fracture, Duminy’s injury is something that they could have ill-afforded.
Apart from consistent contributions with the bat, Duminy is also a reliable off-spinner and has reasonable success as an all-rounder. The left-handed batsman is currently placed 7th in the ICC T20 batsman rankings and 8th in the all-rounder rankings.
The 30-year-old has 4214 T20 runs in 161 innings at an average of 37.62 per dismissal. His off-spin has fetched him 54 wickets in 93 innings at 29.00 runs a piece and at an acceptable economy of 7.51.
