India faced Pakistan at the Old Trafford in Manchester as Azharuddin won the toss for the and elected to bat first in bowler-friendly conditions.
Indian innings began with S Ramesh losing his wicket early on. Sachin Tendulkar looked good with his 65-ball 45 but gave his wicket away to Azhar Mahmood. Rahul Dravid and skipper Azhauddin's half-centuries took the Indian innings forward. However, Pakistan did well to restrict India to just 227/6.
Chasing a low total, Pakistan witnessed some fierce bowling from Venkatesh Prasad. He scalped his career-best figures as he went on to dismiss five of the Pakistani batsmen. Inzamam-ul-Haq showed some resistance with his 41(93), but the rest failed to stand tall.
Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble went on to shatter the Pakistani tail as they were bowled out for 180 and India won by 47 runs.
