Sourav Ganguly, former Indian captain who retired from the international cricket almost 3 years back, is available for selection for Bengal’s Ranji team. Interestingly the chairman of bengal’s selection committee is none other than Deep Das Gupta, who is five years younger than Dada and is junior to him. He had a brief stint in both the Test and One dayers, but failed to capitalise on his opportunities. Sourav played in two Ranji matches in the 2010 season and scored a mere 13 and 7 respectively.
As we know, Sourav has the history of lifting the morale of dressing room, and has encouraged the players every time they were in a bad position- Be it the Eden Gardens victory or the Natwest finals. Both the matches were a possible defeat if Sourav had not boosted the morale of youngsters.
His other career as a TV commentator would stop him from playing the entire season, as he will go to Australia in early December.
Bengal will start their Ranji campaign with matches against Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Gujarat skipper Parthiv Patel said of Ganguly’s inclusion:
“With Ganguly featuring in this game, it will be a good experience though he is in the opposition camp.”
